PREVIEW OF ENCHANTED KINGDOMS
My novel for the collection is a retelling of The Wizard of Oz. My version may not feature tornadoes or the Emerald City, but it *does* have a pretty amazing, mythology-inspired underworld, plenty of extraordinary creatures, and a romance that I hope make your heart melt (watch out, Tin Man!).
Speaking of the Tin Man, he’s the inspiration for Imogen, the heroine in my story! Imogen guides the souls of the dead into the underworld. What happens when Imogen is tasked with leading Evander, a handsome young man with a sad past who simply *has* to get back home to his family? Will she break all the rules of her trade to prove she has a heart? You’ll need to head somewhere over the rainbow to Enchanted Kingdoms to find out!

Hesitantly, I turn to look at my charge. He’s strong-shouldered, with tousled, coppery-brown hair and a faint cleft in his chin. If it weren’t for the stream of blood leaking from the corner of his lips, it would be easy to assume he’s only sleeping.
I wish he was only sleeping.
“Your frailty is such a pity,” I whisper, my voice as unsteady as my hand, while I run my fingertips over his pale cheek. The young man’s skin is cooling rapidly, and I can’t help thinking how the patchy stubble along his jaw will grow no further. “You should have had many more years than this.”
Then, it’s time. Whether I like it or not. Leaning closer, I brush my lips against his forehead. A light kiss, like the kind Filomena gave the old man before.
“Will you wake for me, mortal?” I ask him.
Every spirit comes differently. Some are peaceful; they have already accepted that it’s their time. Others, I’ve heard, are harder. Reluctant. Angry. Unwilling to surrender their lives—usually because of regrets or fear of the afterlife.
But this young man isn’t like either. He’s one of the in-between sort. The type whose spirit hasn’t caught up with the realities of its body. His spirit begins to stir, brightening the colors in his face—ivory and shades of peach, a blush in his lips. Then, it begins to rise off of him like fog, swirling and reshaping until his form is reconstructed before my eyes, pristine and glowing, free from his wounds, and separate from the husk of his physical body left behind.
